First of all, Redfeather Snowshoes are completely handcrafted in the USA, a pretty special thing these days since almost every snowshoe in the Northern Hemisphere is NOT made in the Northern Hemisphere, but in places that for the most part have never seen a snowflake, and they are full of people who have never even tasted one.
Snow angels deserted these places eons ago.
Base camp for Redfeather Snowshoes is La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA, located in the heart of what is known as the Driftless Region, an area untouched by glaciation and a region that is renowned for its bluffs, coulees (those would be valleys surrounded by bluffs, and bluffs are very much like mountains, but smaller and way easier to get to) and the Mississippi River Valley. This is a part of the USA where rivers, streams, creeks, and bluffs are prevalent and you can get to these natural wonders in about 10 minutes instead of 10 hours. And it goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway, ’cause this is our website and we can) that lots of outdoorsy stuff happens all the time. It’s amazing we get any work done at all!
Redfeather Snowshoes are manufactured and owned by ORC Industries, a not-for-profit company whose sole organizational mission is to provide job opportunities for people with disabilities. And one of those opportunities is to make the best snowshoes in the world. A minimum of 75% of our workforce is comprised of people who have a physical or mental disability. ORC trains these individuals, provides vocational and nutritional counseling, wellness training, and life skills with the goal of placing these folks in the general workforce at large. The concept is a simple one; people find personal value through the work that they do, as well as financial compensation. The more Redfeather Snowshoes that are bought, the more people we can put to work who discover the value of being an integral part of creating something very special, namely, Redfeather Snowshoes.
Redfeather Snowshoes is very involved not only in the local La Crosse, Wisconsin community, but in the world community, as well.
Shoe Fitness Program
We work with schools throughout the snowbelt states, helping teachers “activate” kids by getting them outside in the winter and into a pair of Redfeather Snowshoes. We’ve worked very closely with physical education teachers and program coordinators, creating a Snowshoe School Curriculum for K – 12 schools to use and utilize.
Redfeather Snowshoes is also very involved with the Special Olympics, outfitting the Special Olympics Team USA’s Snowshoe Team with Redfeather snowshoes.
Mississippi Valley Conservancy
Ecoparks and conservancies are also very important to us here at Redfeather. They represent a truly natural environment, set aside and protected, where the “silent sport” of snowshoeing can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. Redfeather Snowshoes is a proud sponsor of The Mississippi Valley Conservancy, formed in 1997 and permanently protecting over 12,000 acres of scenic lands in western Wisconsin.
